Base Network Experiences First Downtime Since Launch, Stopping Operations for 29 Minutes

Base, Coinbase’s (COIN) Ethereum layer-2 scaling product, experienced its first service interruption since its 2023 launch, halting essential functions such as block production, deposits, withdrawals, and flashblock operations for 29 minutes before service resumed.

The incident took place at 06:15 UTC due to an “unsafe head delay,” as stated by Base’s incident status page. This technical glitch affected the network’s capability to confirm and produce blocks.

The team reported at 6:43 UTC that they were investigating the outage, and shortly after indicated that the issue had been identified and resolved, with measures in place to prevent further complications.

Although brief, the outage is notable considering Base’s previous record of continuous uptime and its expanding role in the Ethereum layer-2 ecosystem. Since its launch, Base has amassed $4.2 billion in total value locked (TVL), with approximately $1.5 billion linked to the Morpho lending protocol, according to data from RialCenter.
